Minha linguagem é visual, porque bem cedo me foi vedada a palavra. 

Cresci num lar silencioso, onde qualquer vibração da atmosfera seria punida com um relâmpago bem severo. Quando passei a andar pela cidade, percebi que havia muitas outras formas de silenciamento, inclusive nas imagens que retratavam meninas e mulheres como eu. Nas capas das revistas elas não tinham nenhuma voz. Eram corpos expostos para que outros julgassem e delas falassem.

Hoje sou ativista. Circulo entre poetas, músicas, atrizes, professoras e advogadas, que formam um coral de vozes poderosas contra esse silenciamento. Aprendi a falar também, dona de minha boca, fui atriz e cantora de ópera, publiquei livros como escritora e poeta. Mas é na imagem que me sinto segura e afinada. 

Enfeitiçada pela beleza destas vozes poéticas eu passei a desenha-las em quadrinhos, em retratos instantâneos, em Ato Retratos.

A dinâmica deste projeto consiste em criar retratos políticos das poetas, músicas, e contadoras de memórias da cidade. A partir daí criar postais poéticos, quadrinhos ativistas e até murais que falem pela cor e linhas. A oralidade é feminina, nossas vozes jamais deveriam ser silenciadas.

Ali registro visualmente as memórias e esperanças das mulheres das casas, das ruas, dos palcos. Mesclando palavra, som e cor, sinestesicamente, de meninas, mães, irmãs, avós, mulheres em todas suas formas e trans-formas. Ato em retratos dos territórios através das vozes de suas mulheres.

Como é feito

Através da conversa com voluntárias, e também através do registro visual das performances de artistas de rua e palco, traço retratos destas pessoas interferindo com elementos visuais que traduzam suas vivências e esperanças. Nas conversas eu estimulo revelações das memórias, medos, buscas e esperanças das entrevistadas. 

No registro de performances eu apenas escuto e vejo, e registro.

Parte do trabalho é feito no local, no decorrer da conversa ou performance. Parte é completada posteriormente de forma solitária a partir das impressões que colhi.

Resultado

Uma galeria de retratos das participantes é construída revelando suas visões do tempo e território onde vivem, como se deixaram afetar pelo entorno e como pretendem transformar seu mundo. Um painel memorial e político a partir do ponto de vista feminino da vida.

Alguns dos relatos serão transformados em narrativas visuais: histórias em quadrinhos de uma a quatro páginas. O formato base será o papel A4 de boa densidade, trabalhados em técnica mista.

Material

Papeis, tintas, lápis… materiais diversos de desenho em papel.

Um cavalete ou prancheta. 

Tubos de tinta spray (para murais, se requisitados).

Todos de custo baixo e facilmente encontrados em papelarias e lojas de arte.

Self Portracts / Ato Retrato Project

My language is visual, because the word was forbidden to me at a very young age.

I grew up in a quiet home, where any vibration on the atmosphere would be punished with a very severe response. As I've grown up and start walking through the city, I realized that there were many other forms of silencing, including in the pictures depicting girls and women like me. On the covers of those magazines they had no voice. They were exposed bodies for others to judge and speak.

I'm an activist today. I walk between poets, musicians, actresses, teachers and lawyers, together we form a chorus of powerful voices against this silencing. I learned to speak too, owner of my own mouth, I was an actress and an opera singer, I published books as a writer and poet. But it is in the graphic design that I feel safe and attuned.

Bewitched by the beauty of these poetic voices I began to draw them in comics, in instant portraits, in portraits that are political acts, the Self Portracts.

The dynamic of this project is to create political portraits of the poets, musicians, and accountants of the city's memories. Draw from those stories the material to create poetic postcards, comic strips and even murals that speak with a voice of colors and lines. Orality is a feminine domain, our voices should never be silenced. 

The aim is to visually record the memories and hopes of the women living on the houses, wandering in the streets, performing on the stages. Merging word, sound and color, synestesically, from girls, mothers, sisters, grandmothers, women in all their forms and trans-forms. Politically acting on colorful portraits of those territories through the voices of their women.

How is done

Through the dialogue with volunteers, and also through the visual record of the performances on street and on stage, I trace portraits of these people, interfering with visual elements that translate their experiences and hopes. In the conversations I stimulate revelations of the interviewees' memories, fears, pursuits, and hopes.

When portraying of the performances I just listen and see, and the record the informations on the surface of the drawing board.

Some of the creative work is done on the spot, in the course of the conversation or performance. Part is solved afterwards from the impressions I have collected.

The Results

A gallery of portraits of the participants is constructed revealing their visions of the time and territory in which they live, how they let themselves be affected by the surroundings and how they intend to transform their world. A memorial and political panel from the feminine point of view of life.

Some of the stories will also be transformed into visual narratives: comics from one to four pages. The base format will be A4 paper of good density, worked in mixed media. But other shapes and materials may be explored during the course of the residence.

Working Material

Papers, watercolors, pencils… various paper-drawing materials.

An easel or drawing board.

Spray paint tubes (for murals, if required).

All low cost material and easily to found at the art supplies shop.
